The Maryland State Retirement Agency is the administrator of
the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System (“System”). The
System is a defined benefit retirement system covering governmental
employees within the State of Maryland. The System is a
multi-employer, public employees’ defined benefit retirement system
composed of twelve (12) separate retirement and pension systems
with over 50 different rule sets. The System has over 397,000
participants (customers), including 192,000 members who are
actively employed and participating in the System, 165,000 payees
who receive a monthly payment from the System, and 40,000 vested
members who are no longer actively employed but have earned a
benefit that will become payable at a future date.GRADE
The Agency's Benefits Processing Unit is recruiting to fill an
Accountant Trainee position.

Primary responsibilities include preparing and reviewing
monetary reconciliations of processed retirement applications,
retirement estimates, and revision transactions. Preparing manual
benefit calculation worksheets to confirm accuracy of retirement
transactions, and estimates and retirement worksheets prepared by
other staff. Timely and accurate processing of transactions related
to these processes are essential elements in aiding the Agency in
meeting the objective of our Mission Statement which is to
effectively communicate to participants and employer's information
about benefits provided by the system.POSITION DUTIES
This position works within the Revision/Check Replacement &
Reconciliation section of the Benefits Processing Unit. This team
of accountants is responsible for reconciling the inputs and
results of the computer jobs that create benefits estimates for
members, retirement records for new retirees, and revisions of
retirement records for existing retirees. These jobs are processed
on a daily basis and must be reconciled the next business day to
ensure that accurate information is being communicated to the
system’s members and that correct benefits are being paid to the
system’s retirees. As part of the reconciliation process, this
position is also responsible for proving the benefit calculations
performed by the automated computer jobs. This position also, after
documenting that a payment is due and verifying the amount that is
due, re-issues payments to payees in cases where a direct deposit
has failed or a check has been returned to the agency, or a check
has become staled dated or had a stop payment placed on it. Special
projects will also be assigned to this position as required.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education: A Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited
college or university, including or supplemented by three credit
hours in auditing.
1. Candidates may substitute a Bachelor’s degree from an
accredited college or university with thirty credit hours in
Accounting and related courses, including or supplemented by three
credit hours auditing, for the required education.
2. Applicants who have met the requirements for admission to the
CPA examination prior to July 1, 1974 will be considered to have
met the educational requirement referenced above.
- One year of demonstrated experience using Microsoft Excel, Word
- One year of demonstrated experience preparing and reviewing
